Former City Manager Bill Way Is Roasted
Story and Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
Numerous California City friends and co-workers of William (Bill) Way assembled at Ramon's restaurant Thursday to wish him good luck in his new endeavour and thank him for his contribution to the community. Mayor David Evans had the pleasure to reward Mr. Way with a pleiad of plaques and certificates for his accomplishments as California City Manager for the last 3 years, and thanked him for his commitment and dedication to the betterment of our City. Mr. Evans also talked about the friendship and collaboration that built up strongly during Bill's term. Police Chief and actual interim City Manager offered Bill a Totem Pole with amusing notations from the Police department, and said that if she accepts the full time position of City Manager, she would have big shoes to fill (so to speak), but promised to do her best to follow in his footsteps. Mr. Jim Quiggle, EDC Vice-President, presented Bill with a souvenir T-Shirt from California City that was autographed by participants and other well-wishing friends, and said that he forgave Bill for calling him Mr. Quiggley and signed the shirt, Jim Quiggley. Lt Steve Colerick and Sgt Eric Hurtado joined the roasting by having Mr. Way assume the position and gave him a mock search for the enjoyment of the crowd. Mr. Bill Way ended the farewell dinner by thanking everyone for their help, support, and friendship during his journey in California City, but mentioned that without his wonderful wife, Dana, who supported, loved, and mentored him, none of this would have been possible. GOODBYE BILL...

Story and Photo by Jean Paul LeBlanc
The McMillin clan sure does not put any limitations, when it is time to help a member of the family! The whole family is voluntarily renovating the Community Center, soon to be called "California City Art Center", so that Brittany’s dream of owning her own studio can come true, while at the same time, the renovation is giving a face lift to one of the oldest buildings in California City. The new dance studio, named "NO LIMITATIONS DANCE SOURCE", will provide the children of California City a safe, clean place to learn the art of dance as well as have fun in a positive, encouraging environment. The McMillins' efforts are in appreciation of the support Brittany has been given by the many dancers and residents of California City.   California City Studio To Produce Theology Based Films
Story by Nute Kelly at 760-373-4966 or eastkernnews@fvmca.com
California City Studios, once dubbed the studio that makes flicks in the sticks by the Los Angeles Daily News for its local and distance from Hollywood center core, has struck a deal to give Wal-Mart first look at all theie new video releases. The studio better known for racy films made for HBO and Showtime, turns a new corner with Theology based films.
The owner, Russell Michael, stated in an interview that they have never made any films til now. Most of their business has been as a production facility. The only productions we have been involved in have been documentaries, says Russell. Although, we have always had our hands in on the set design, prop production, set building, lighting, and development, says Russell, who has a Script titled "Fathom Penn", has landed him a Hollywood agent ( WLwriter agency).
This is a new and exciting time for us, and we have a lot of the community of Mojave involved in helping us put our first few videos into production. We are looking forward to a great year and even greater involvement in our community, says Russell.
Our first release will be "Jesus at the bottom of the bottle". The story of an alcoholic man who hits bottom when his bottle is empty. He finds him self down and out in the middle of the Mojave desert with no where to turn, with no homes, water, or people in sight. The script is being co-penned by Russell and a Hollywood heavy. Due to the strike Russell stated, he can't reveal the name of his co-writer. Production is to start in a couple weeks at the studio.

California City Sports Arena To Be Replaced
Story and Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
On Monday, January 7, 2008, Michelle Hornback, Parks and Rec Supervisor, was a little sad when demolition crews started demolishing a landmark in Central Park, California City. The Park and Recreation Center that was erected in the late 60's, was an avant-guarde structure for its time and was in use until vandals started a fire that caused enough damage to render the building unsafe. The New Recreation Center (soon to be open) will be bigger and provide more services to the population and mostly to our youth, but the dismise of this unusual architectural accomplishment is a big loss for the aesthetic view on this side of the park.
