School Completion Details Given By Shawn Sprague
Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
The California City Economic Development Corporation held its monthly breakfast at Foxy's in the airport. The morning gathering had maximum attendance, and Dr. Larry Adams, EDC President, officiated the meeting. Secretary Pat Gorden introduced this month's guest speaker: Shawn Sprague, Mojave Unified School Board Director, who spoke about the School District's political and economical challenges. Shawn explained the particulars of the use of the recently voted School Bond, the details of what has been done and will be done in regard to completing the High School and Hacienda Elementary. He also regrets that politics imposes general rules that should not apply to our City and cited the example of the State Engineers forcing them to have a "Snow Load Capacity" on a shade awning and by this fact, doubling the cost of that part of the project. That might be one reason why the School Board is trying to plan ahead at least 3 to 4 years in advance. Mr. Sprague gave a very detailed presentation and was also very professional and knowledgeable during the question period after his speech. Dr. Adams presented a check in the amount of $ 10,000.00 to Michelle Hornback of California City Parks and Recreation. The check was a tourism grant from the Kern County Board of Trade through a sponsorship from EDC. The money will be used to promote the 6th Annual Renaissance Fair, which attracts more and more people every year.

The Executive Director of the Kern County Board of Trade, Rick Davis, and Directors Linda Parker and Dave Hook, presented a "Giant Check" of $10,000 to Mary Ann LeBlanc of the California City Economic Development Corporation to be remitted to the California City Renaissance Festival Committee. The two-day event held on the third weekend of October in the City's Central Park is organized by California City Art Commission, California City Parks and Recreation and is co-sponsored by the California City Economic Development Corporation. The Renaissance Festival has been instrumental in increasing tourism and revenues and is entering its sixth year of recreating the 16th Century Royal Court and the period it represented. Michele Hornback, one of the instigators of the project, said that the Renaissance Festival never ceased to grow every year and now attracts Fairgoers from all over California and even from other States. Tehachapi Heritage League, represented by President Charles White, also received a $8200 grant from the Kern Board of Trade. The Heritage League plans to use that money to set up an advertizing billboard along State Hwy 58 to promote the Tehachapi Historic Downtown where museums, shopping, and restaurants are predominant. Downtown Tehachapi increase tourism and preserved the history of the City. The Heritage League is one of the best promoters of these attractions. Kern County Board of Trade help these non-profit organizations every year by way of grants to help tourism and film industries promote Kern County.
