The Illusions Jazz Thing Up At Ramon's
  Story by Jennifer Wood
Ramon's Mexican & Seafood Restaurant hosted "The Illusions", a jazz and more band, this evening. The music was great! And all those who stayed until the last song had a wonderful time. This is the kind of entertainment California City needs.
After dinner, many stayed to listen to a variety of music from jazz to classic rock, and danced in an area opened up by the restaurant staff. "The Illusions" feature California City resident, Chuck Eros on trumpet, Lancaster entertainers, Anthony Scaglione on keyboard and Eric G on drums. If you weren't there, you really missed out.

The California City branch of AltaOne Federal Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of what could be considered the most modern bank in California. The business area inside the building is a tasteful mix of art, functional design, and the state of art computerized facility. It is 4 times the size of their previous location.
To spruce up the event, BC Corbin broadcasted live on location for KLOA radio. Alverdia McMillin, Branch Manager, welcomed everyone personally and introduced the mascot nicknamed, "Seemore Savings ".
The huge crowd who attended the event, brave the heat of over 100 degrees, were treated to free drinks and food catered by the Pizza Factory. The Mojave High School Cheerleaders also delivered a great performance. Other activities, were face painting, balloon art, and the California City Police Department gave information on gun locks and safety. Thanks, AltaOne for a day to remember in California City.

  A California City Cool Center
The Police Station now has one of Kern County's designated Cooling Centers. It is a room set up and open to the public when the outside temperature reaches 108° or higher. It is mainly for the elderly or for those who do not have air conditioning in their homes. The room is set up with tables and chairs, water bottles, and some snacks. It would primarily be used in the afternoon hours when the temperatures peak. There are Coolong Centers throughout Kern County, and this is one set up for California City. The room is also the City's Warming Center in the event the outside temperatures are frigid.

Story & Photo by Jean Paul LeBlanc

California City Optimist Club

California City Optimist Club had the pleasure to welcome special Optimist guests from England speak at our general membership meeting July 9, 2007, 5:30 pm.  The meeting was at 6 p.m. at the California City Pizza Factory.
Martin and Jayne Cripps, are 20 year veterans with the English Police department. Martin is a motorcycle officer, rain or shine, he is always on his bike. Jayne works dispatch and brought up two active boys, who are first class Soccer players.
Martin has had the privilege in riding to protect the Queen, riding in special parades and traveling all over England or special locations both to represent the law enforcement officers and to assist in emergencies.
This was their 5th trip to California, and 3rd to California City.  They are presently long time friends and Ed and Linda Waldheim's guests.  After Martin won the 1985 Tour America race, Ed, already an avid motorcycle rider, invited him to visit California.  The rest is history like they say.  Martin and his wife, Jayne shared with the Optimist Club about the Police procedures in England and a few anecdotes about their jobs.  They also talked about Soccer, which seems to be their family's favorite sport.
After the dinner-meeting, Ed and Linda treated everybody to Ice Cream at the Old Cal City Coffee House.  The California City Optimist Club always has great guests and their meetings are open to the public.  Make sure you attend the next one...

  Citywide Street Crime Crackdown
Story by Sgt Eric Hurtado, California City Police Department

The second phase of a citywide crackdown on street crime in California City was launched on the 4th of July. California City Police Department joined forces with Kern & Tulare County’s Street Interdiction Team and targeted street crimes and hunted for wanted persons in the community. The agencies that assisted California City included: Arvin Police Department, California City Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Delano Police Department, F.B.I., Kern County District Attorney’s Office, Kern County Probation Department, and Shafter Police Department. The 5-hour operation netted 13 arrests throughout the city.

The citywide street crime crackdown started with its first operation on May 18th. There have been over 160 arrests in connection with the different crime sweeps since the first operation.

The Crime Rates in California City had been on the rise during the first part of 2007. The rise in most of crime rates areas have stopped and in some, the crimes rates are starting to go down. This decline correlated with the ability to increase neighborhood patrols, beginning of the random crime sweeps and the two large Multi-Agency crime sweeps. The Police Department will be continuing its “Zero tolerance” on street crimes.
