California City Keeps The 760 Area Code For Now |
|
| |
On September 25, Kern County Supervisor Jon McQuiston held a public hearing on the "760 442" issue in Lake Isabella in the Kern River Valley. On September 29, Kern County Supervisor Jon McQuiston & Ridgecrest Mayor Chip Holloway held a public hearing on the "760 442" issue in Ridgecrest, Kern County’s largest city within the 760 area code. Of those who came up to the microphone to speak (approx 30 persons): 90% oppose the 442 overlay; 70 % oppose the 442 overlay and want to keep their 760 area code; 20% oppose the 442 overlay, but said they’d be OK with a 'flip' (N SD County staying 760 & the rest changing to a 442 area code); 10% said an overlay zone solution is part of technological advances needed, so accept it. At its 9am, September 30 Regular Meeting, the Kern County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Supervisor McQuiston’s Resolution Supporting CPUC decision to retain existing 760 area code in all areas outside north San Diego County opposing the 442 overlay zone. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is scheduled to decide this issue on October 16, 2008.

California City Optimist last good deed was to send books to the Philippines. Aside from helping our local youth, our Optimists also participate on the International scene by sending surplus books to needy schools around the world. Their participation was to assemble, sort, box, and ship educational books to three schools in three different towns in the Philippines. The Optimist and volunteers worked on this project Thursday, September 11 and Saturday, September 13. The books were sent the following Monday for shipping.
The California City Optimist Club, this past year alone, gave computers to Hacienda Elementary School, founded a California City JOOI club (Junior Octagon Optimist International), collected $ 4,000.00 in books, organized an Essay Contest, gave away scholarships and achievement awards, contributed to youth’s activities and to the new Strata Sports Center, and much more. If you want to do a little extra for our kids, The Optimist Club is always looking for more members to participate or just help and support with your donations to this worthy cause.

Pre-Dawn Raid On Meth Dealer |
|
| |
The California City PD Narcotics Unit struck again in another drug raid, this time targeting a methamphetamine dealer in the 20600 block of 83rd Street. Toy McFarland, 48 years, was arrested for possession for sale of methamphetamine after a search warrant was served early Saturday morning. Also seized was a large amount of cash as proceeds from drug sales. Members of the Department’s Special Enforcement Team, as well as police officers from Ridgecrest PD and Stallion Springs PD assisted in the pre-dawn raid.
Investigators also discovered spent bullet casings inside McFarland’s garage, believed to be related to the gang shooting two weeks ago that resulted in three persons being struck by gunfire. This shooting occurred directly in front McFarland’s residence. Three persons are in custody on unrelated charges as this investigation continues to progress. Seven firearms were seized, while two were determined to be stolen.
Agents for the Narcotics Unit purchased controlled substances from McFarland during a buy program, out of his residence on 83rd Street. McFarland was booked into County Jail on the felony charge, with his arraignment pending in Mojave Superior Court.

California City High School Ravens Win The First Football Game |
|
| |
Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc |

|
| |
The California City Ravens played their first football game Saturday, September 6, in Mojave and defeated their opponent Desert Christians with a surprising 22-7 score. Coach Daniel Williford must be doing something right, because the Ravens are on to a great start, and it looks like this season is going to be very entertaining. The crowd went wild many times and the cheerleaders must suffer from sore throat by now, but it was a great night for the Raven's first appearance.
Many California City residents made the short trip to Mojave to support the Ravens, and of the many personalities that we spotted, were Mayor David Evans and his family, Councilman Mike Edmiston and Jan Sprague of City Hall (whose son Korey plays on the team). The most popular comment heard was: “This is a good field, but we can’t wait to have games in California City on a brand new "terrain". |

Councilmen Candidates Debate |
|
| |
It’s official! It started Thursday, September 4. The political race started at 1:30pm Thursday afternoon in the council chambers. Incumbent councilman Kevin Schafer and his two opponents William “Bill” Smith and Charles “Chuck” McGuire had their first debate in front of California City employees.
To their credit, all three candidates were extremely respectful of each other and there were no wisecracks or anything of the sort. A panel of four City employees, lead by Allan Vasquez, tested the candidates with questions and concerns about their plans for the future of the city, and how these changes, if any, would affect them.
Mr. Schafer, who has resided in California City for the last 5 or 6 years, said he has now learned a lot about listening to everybody involved before making his decision, and if after research, the arguments are plausible and correct, he will often change his first impression. "It is challenge, but I will struggle along." When asked about trying to bring a supermarket to California City, Mr. Schafer explained that they tried and tried and are getting really close to enter into an agreement with a local developer and Green Frog Markets. Déjà vu? Only time will tell.
Mr. Bill Smith said he was hoping for that question after the panel asked, "What his plans would be for the roads." “Our roads need constant improvements, not just at election time” and he commended (as did all the candidates) the employees for doing so much with so little. But he understands their situation, having employees of his own, and assured the crowd that his experience, as a businessman, who owns 2 successful businesses in town, Ace City Hardware and Pizza Factory, gives him the advantage of knowing how to work with people and how to treat employees. To be able to accomplish his goals for the city that he’s been calling home for such a long time, “Bill” as everyone calls him, said that progress comes little at a time, but building a good infrastructure and bringing in a market here would also bring in other residents, and new retail businesses with their sales taxes, and would restore the city to its original goals. Mr. Smith proved himself with his successful business. Can he duplicate success?
Last but not least to comment, is also a long time resident (37 years) and a retired veteran of the California Highway Patrol. He has held many positions for the city as “on call” firefighter and serves on the Citizens Advisory Commission. Mr. McGuire informed, that he is willing to work for and with the employees. Morale is very low, because of lack of communication regarding city plans from the city’s officials, and employees are moved around too often without notice. If elected, he would make them proud to go to work again, like they used to. One of Chuck’s mottos toward employees would be “You don’t work for me, I work for you”. Mr. McGuire said I don’t promise anything, but there will be changes, mostly in communication and information. Speaking of the council, Chuck believe that it should not be “us and them”. It should be us.
Incumbent Councilman Dr. Nick Lessenevich was not present.
The political forum for the mayoral candidates is scheduled for 6:00pm, September 30 at the California City Middle School and is sponsored by the California City Chamber of Commerce.

Space Station Village Coming To California City |
|
| |
Story by Van Pray |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Russell Michael of California City Studios plans to build a 5 to 10 acre Space Station Village to attract filming and tourism to California City. The Space Station Village that he plans to build will be futuristic, and much in the tradition of the Star Trek attraction in Las Vegas that stood for 10 years and is now being dismantled and no longer offered to the public. Russell believes this is an added advantage for California City to attract the millions of visitors that once went to Las Vegas to now join us in California City.
Russell stated that he has enlisted the help of set and design builders from Hollywood and plans to make this either the hottest set in the world for filming, or one of California's most sought after attractions of people from around the world to California City. Warner Brothers will do the model and it should be done in late October. The
Russell stated, "If I build it in town and open it 4 days a week for tourists and 3 days a week for filming that would be the best bet for the city. If I open it here at the studio, only I benefit, but I'm going to build it. I hoping for center of town but, it works just fine here." The name of the new amusement park will be "Space Port One". For more information see "Space Port One". |
