  5th Annual Cancer Walk Award
5th Annual Cancer Walk

A beautiful crystal like sculpture of glass and laser engraving was the ultimate reward for certain participants and groups of participants.  But the real reward is knowing that you walked to prove that you care. The people who volunteered their time and effort and donations do care about victims of cancer and cancer patients. The fund raising event was created in 2004 to help local and area residents who suffer financial hardship because of this dreaded illness. More than 150 people of all ages walked the 3 mile trail and those with less capacity, strolled a shorter path in Central Park.

  Shawn Thompson's Skateboard Accident
  Skateboard Accident In Central Park
Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
A sad thing happened in California City Central Park, Sunday afternoon when a 12 years old skateboarder lost control going down the access ramp to the hill, fell and hurt his back. Mary Ann LeBlanc, who was close by volunteering for Pioneer Days, immediately dialed 911 and the Fire Department responded in a record time to help the young Shawn Thompson who seemed to be hurt serious.  Chuck McGuire, an experience paramedic who happened to be in the area, gave the accident victim a first examination and lent a helpful hand to the fire dept.  After close evaluation, Hall Ambulance was requested and the young Thompson transported to a medical facility presumably for x-rays and treatment.  We wish the best recovery to Shawn and hope that this sad incident will be a lesson for him and all skateboarders. It is a smart thing to wear protective gear when indulging in any sport!
