  Thanksgiving Weekend Brings The Crowds

Desert
Desert
Desert

Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
The Off Roaders setup camps like our pioneers did.  They parked in a circle and create what looks like a small community.  What shocked me was that as soon as you go two or three miles out of town, the desert becomes clean again!  Where those riders are camping is clean too, and when they leave, they take their trash with them.  Makes you ashamed of all the mattresses,TVs and other odd junk that we find in the immediate desert around town.  I seriously doubt, the guy who comes here to ride the desert with a $40,000.00 truck, a $30,000.00 trailer and $20,000.00 worth of toys, brings that kind of trash with him!  The funny thing is that trash cans are rare in the desert, but it's clean anyway.  And guess what?  No flying plastic bags, coffee cups or fast food wrappers.  The only logic to that fact is that the people using the desert are more civilized than the people using the town!  I don't think so, but you have to admit that this is the way it looks!  It's not the garbage can covers not closing properly, or the wind that is our biggest thrasher, it's "us", the people who live here.  Time we regain our pride and clean after ourselves.

D.I.R.T. Officers Offer Maps And Rules To The Off Roaders
Story And Photos By Jean Paul LeBlanc
Police Officers from the D.I.R.T. team were flagging the Off Road people coming to or through California City tonight to offer them maps and rules (laws) about off road enjoyment around here.  They also notified visitors of the new improvement plans that the City is working on.  According to Officer Kaupp (no pun...that is his name), the new improvements would help the riders with more services and emergency response personnel as well as possibly more rangers.  There will be a small fee (to be announced by the city in January 2008) to cover the expense difference not covered by the "green sticker fee" already in place.  According to Officer Kaupp, on long weekends like this Thanksgiving weekend, more than 70,000 riders are expected and more services and personnel is a must.

Veteran's Day Ceremony Held On Monday At Freedom Park
The Veteran’s Day Tribute was a very touching moment for everyone in attendance. Veterans from all branches of our military were represented.  Some in uniforms, but many in civilian attires.  Don Cook, a USMC Vietnam Veteran, officiated the ceremony and rendered a touching speech, full of love and praise for our armed forces and their sacrifices for our country.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9375 and The American Legion Post # 476 started the activities by riding in (what will eventually be called Freedom Park) with the flags of our five military branches and were escorted by the California City Police Department.  Chaplain Colonel Ronald Spark, a veteran of Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Iraq, gave the invocation and USMC Pastor Samuel Pope, also a Vietnam vet, gave a “poignant” speech, preceded by main speaker, Mayor David Evans.  The Star Spangled Banner was performed beautifully by Krystal Schalk, followed by J. Newman with a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace, and Travis Para played Taps.  Numerous personalities and veterans attended the ceremony in respect for our past, present and future heroes.  Even the Boy Scouts were flag bearer and Ty Munson recited the Pledge of Allegiance, immediately followed by the raising of Old Glory by MSgt Russell Eddington, a Korea and Vietnam veteran, and Specialist Phillip Beatty, Iraq since 1999.  Rhonda and Allen Vasquez, promoters of the idea of having a “Freedom Park” dedicated to our veterans, participated actively in the set up and presentation of the ceremony.  Rose Cook, representative of the VFW Post # 9375 Ladies Auxiliary, closed the event.  And on a lighter note, our Little Miss California City, Hannah could be a poster girl for Uncle Sam!

  Contagious Cleanup
Story and Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
On Friday, November 9, the City of California City decided that all employees in a non-emergency assignment should for that whole day be mobilized to cleaning detail, so they can try to match the fantastic work that the general population accomplished on November 3.  Not an easy task!
And they did all the work with enthusiasm and pride.  We live here...Let's keep it clean!
