  "Toys For Tots" Part 2
Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
“Toys for Tots” at the California City Airport last Saturday having been a success, today at the Community Center, the toys collected were distributed to needy children, and parents were treated to cookies and refreshments.  Kids, or the entire family, also had an opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa.  A lot of different organizations were involved in this worthwhile cause.  Some were our U.S. Marines, Community Club, Old Tin Car Club, California City Street Rods, Parks and Recreation, Salvation Army and pictured below with Shelly Hornback, members of the Mojave Robotic Team.

The Junior Octagon Optimist International was involved in the fund raising Christmas Tree Festival at Hacienda Elementary on Wednesday.  The JOOI club’s first activity was a success and the student enjoyed the experience of getting involved in community projects.  The Club, who is supervised by Optimist Julie Phelps and sponsored by the California City Optimist Club, makes their own decisions and plans learning initiative and creation.  Qualities they will use all their life.  The festival was a fund raising for the new school’s much needed library and other necessities.

Bad Accident At California City Boulevard And 90th Street
Story & Photos by Jean Paul LeBlanc
A 2000 Ford Expedition and a 1998 Toyota collided with each other Wednesday at 4:15 pm.  A lamp post was also destroyed as the SUV rolled over.  The SUV driver was in bad shape.  It took a "Jaws of Life" to cut the entire roof to get the driver to a waiting Mercy Air helicopter.  The Police Department, Fire Departments from California City and Mojave, and the Hall's ambulance EMTs were involved.  The Fire Department had to use all their techniques, tools and experience to cut the roof off without hurting the victim more.  A brave fireman was inside to protect him.  The Toyota driver did not seem hurt.  Cause of the accident is unknown and under investigation at this time.

  Sears Kids Day
Story & Photo by Jean Paul LeBlanc
The National Event, in collaboration with our Police Department, fingerprints youngsters and gives the parents the prints.  In case of abduction or accident, the print record can be accessed faster and thus possibly save lives, according to Officer Flores of the California City PD.  Fred Whitney, the owner of our local Sears store, added many personal touches to the event; like a Fun Jumping House for kids, a hairdresser on location for the day, pictures with Santa, Popcorn, coffee and refreshments, etc.  Fred is well known for doing things all the way or not at all.  Christmas shopping has already started.  I know I needed this reminder since Sears isn't always my first choice.  Amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and they haven’t withdrawn from their commitment.  Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year?  How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for military duty?  By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more.  Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being called up.  Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years. I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution.  I suggest we all shop at Sears, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there, so the company gets the positive reinforcement it well deserves.

The only Global Warming on the tarmac of California City Airport Saturday morning was in the heart of the people who showed up to donate toys for less fortunate kids. The yearly event, mainly sponsored by our Marines and members of Old Tin Car Club, attracted a generous crowd this year again and many groups like the VFW, the Police and Fire Departments, California City Misses, Daisy Girl Scouts, Krafty Krew, Foxy’s Restaurant and others participated to the gathering.  The Fire Department brought Santa Claus, who, to the pleasure of the young crowd, gave away candies and posed graciously for picture.  Various airplanes also landed to bring toys for tots in their own special way.

Chamber Of Commerce Holds First Mixer
Story & Photo by Jean Paul LeBlanc
The Chamber of Commerce had a Mixer on Saturday as part of their continuing efforts to bring businesses together and exchange ideas and suggestions for the good of the City. The event was organized by Director Charles Cooper, who gave a presentation about Prepaid Legal Services and MC'd by President Buford Land.  Even considering the small participation, a smart business person could learn a lot from such an activity and reinforce existing networking relations with other enterprises and even City officials.  Do not miss the next one, even if just for the food and door prizes!

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony At City Hall
The California City Community Club along with Miss California City turned the lights on the Christmas tree this year.  Even with the cold temperatures, there was a good turnout of families with the Christmas spirit.
