Tuesday morning, December 23, Santa and his representative: Lou Peralta finished the distribution of clothing for less fortunate families in our area. The fantastic work accomplished by Lou's group will long be remembered as the most charitable event of 2008... What a gracious generosity! Thanks again to Lou Peralta, Mayor Larry Adams, Fred Whitney, Reverend Ronald Sparks, Alan Bell and all the volunteers, who made this Christmas Gift possible. |

Santa must be behind this humanitarian effort led by local Promoter Lou Peralta, Businessman Fred Whitney, Newly elect Mayor Dr Larry Adams, Reverend Dr Ronald Spark and longtime resident Alan Bell. Lou Peralta, during one of his racing trips, found a huge shipment of food and clothing that could not be delivered to its Mexican recipients, because of Border Customs technicalities and did everything necessary to make sure the shipment would not go ignored and abandoned. With help from Fred Whitney and Alan Bell, Lou acquired, transported and delivered the much needed goods to the California City airport hangar graciously lent for the occasion by Mayor Adams. Once unloaded and upon the direction of Reverend Sparks, the tons of goods were divided and redistributed to different California City churches, including Edwards. Numerous volunteers helped in the transition of the food and clothing and will redistribute these to needy families in their own parishes. Lou Peralta kept his word when he said after the past election: “Even if I did not get elected to be Mayor, nothing will stop me from working for the City I love”. |

A Safe Holiday Weekend |
|
| |
Press Release by Lt Eric Hurtado, California City Police Department |
|
| |
Both the Police and Fire Departments joined together throughout the Thanksgiving Holiday to ensure the public safety of the citizen’s of California City and the thousands of visitors that arrived throughout the week. Visitors started arriving early as hundreds of RV’s started lining up on California City Blvd, the Friday before Thanksgiving. Visitors stayed 3 to 4 days throughout the week while others stayed the entire week. Preliminary results from the City’s Traffic Counters that were placed on Randsburg-Mojave Road indicate that the peak 4 days of the holiday (from Thanksgiving Day to December 1st) there was an average of 25,000 people each day in the City’s designated Off-Road Riding Area.
The Police and Fire Department set up an Incident Command Post at Borax Bill Park for the week long operation. Through the Incident Command Post, the City’s emergency personnel networked through other agencies to effectively relay and designate emergency and non-emergency responses in the area. During Thanksgiving week, the City’s Police and Fire Departments worked with Kern County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol Air Support Unit, Bureau of Land Management, Hall’s Ambulance, Mercy Air Ambulance, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Air Rescue, and Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
The City’s Fire Department Paramedics treated 84 patients over the 4-day period. Many patients were treated for minor injuries from falling off of motorcycles and pre-existing health problems. There were 12 serious injuries that required an Air Ambulance to transport the patients to specialized hospitals out of the area.
The Police Department issued several citations for riding motorcycles without helmets and reckless driving. Desert Incident Response Team volunteers assisted in locating and returning around 1 dozen lost riders and children back with their families. The City’s Riding Permit Program was a success with the City issuing 8,000 permits in one week. The $8/per Off-Highway Vehicle permit was met positively by 99% of the visitors. The total amount of permits issued to date is 18,000.
The City’s main funding for Off-Road Safety is a current Grant from the State Parks and Recreation Division. The State pays 75% the hourly rate of off-duty Fire Department Paramedics and Police Department Officers to work on their days off to staff emergency personnel in the riding area. The remaining 25% is paid out of the City’s Riding Permit Fund Account as “Matching Funds”. The Riding Permit Fund also pays for 1st aid supplies and equipment that are used by emergency personnel. |
